The 640x480 rule of thumb does not apply to images you take with your digital camera. For today's digital still cameras, 640x480 would be low resolution. Remember: images grabbed from video will never look as good as images shot with a still digital camera.
For example, even modest, low-cost digital cameras typically offer the following higher resolutions:
With so many more dots to work with, an image recorded at 2,048x1,526 will be about ten times sharper than a 640x480 image.
