The third edition of Television features enlarged sections on "reality" television, animation and critical methods, and updated examples from recent TV programs.
We've improved upon what has been called the "best textbook on television." Based on comments and requests from television-studies educators we revised Television and released a third edition in September 2006.
New and improved features:- Doubles the size of the chapter surveying critical methods applied to television. Acknowledging television studies' blossoming during the past ten years, we have endeavored to introduce the student to the major critical methods applied to TV:
Auteur theory
Genre study
Semiotics
Ideological analysis
Political economy
Feminism and queer theory
Racial and ethnic studies
This chapter, on its own, would provide a useful overview for courses on TV critical methods. You may preview the manuscript version of it online in PDF format: - Incorporates "reality" television into the non-narrative chapter--which, overall, was expanded 40%. Just as the previous edition was going to press, reality TV exploded onto the scene as a major form of television discourse. We here recognize its significance and dissect its meanings.
- Covers the evolution of animation since 1990. The author of Tunes for 'Toons, Daniel Goldmark, joined our team to refresh and enlarge the animation chapter.
- Improves the quality of the frame grabs. Virtually all the frame grabs were recaptured using new software/hardware.
- Refers directly to the instructor's DVD. After publishing the last edition, we released a companion DVD to instructors, at no charge. This edition makes more specific use of the examples on that DVD.
- The companion Website: TVCrit.com has been given a face lift and all the new illustrations have been incorporated along with TV-studies syllabi, sample student papers, tutorials on grabbing frames from video and creating compilation DVDs, and more.
